Metro Shelving Buying Guide

Metro-Shelving_new_sqChoosing shelving and storage systems for your restaurant, hotel, or any other foodservice establishment can be tedious since there are so many styles, materials, finishes, and configurations to choose from. It’s likely the ideal storage system for your commercial kitchen will keep your cooking supplies and ingredients clean, organized, and easily accessible, but should you purchase corrosion-proof shelving that can roll from room to room? Or heavy-duty shelving that can store food in an industrial freezer or be disassembled and cleaned in a commercial dishwasher?

Below, we’ve gathered all you need to know about the five major InterMetro shelving systems in this easy-to-understand buyers’ guide so you can make an informed decision about which shelving systems are the best fit for your commercial kitchen.

MetroMax

MetroMax shelving units are all made, to some degree, with durable polymer materials that won’t corrode like most metals. Available in three different options for varying budgets, weight-bearing needs, and configurations, MetroMax has something for all commercial kitchens.

Keep in mind that each option includes the ability to use reinforced dunnage shelves (which can bear higher amounts of weight) and a range of accessories that are interchangeable between shelving units (shelf dividers, label holders, storage baskets, drying racks, etc.).

MetroMax Q

MetroMaxQMetroMax Q shelving is made with both polymer and wire components, which means it’s rust-resistant yet durable. These epoxy-coated shelves feature an electroplated substrate that reinforces and protects the metal components. It also features InterMetro’s Microban antimicrobial product protection, which is built into the shelf mats and frames to resist bacteria, mold, mildew, and fungi growth. These shelves effortlessly snap into place and adjust quickly without tools, and parts of the unit are interchangeable with MetroMax 4 and MetroMax i products. Open-grid mats promote air circulation and light penetration that detach for handwashing or sanitizing at a higher temperature in a commercial dishwasher.

MetroMax Q shelving key features:

  • Rust- and corrosion-resistant (15-year warranty)
  • Bacteria-, mold-, mildew-, and fungi-resistant
  • Adjusts without tools in one-inch increments
  • Vented open-grid and solid polymer shelf mats detach easily for thorough hand- or machine-washing
  • Steel with electroplated substrate and abrasion-resistant epoxy finish
  • Adjustable feet and shelf wedge connectors made of reinforced nylon
  • Available in stationary, mobile, and high-density track options
  • 800-pound capacity per shelf, 2,000 pounds per stationary unit
  • 900- to 1,200-pound capacity per shelf on heavy-duty dunnage shelves
  • 600- to 900-pound capacity as a mobile unit (depending on casters used)
  • Can withstand temperatures of -20 to 125 degrees Fahrenheit with intermittent exposure to 200 degrees Fahrenheit (for cleaning)

MetroMax 4

MetroMax4MetroMax 4 shelving feature a 100% rust-proof, all-polymer design for ultimate durability and service life. Like the other MetroMax shelving options, MetroMax 4 units can be assembled without tools in minutes and is also compatible with MetroMax Q and MetroMax i products. All MetroMax 4 shelving mats feature a 3/16-inch tall “ship’s ledge” that prevents drips and spills from spreading. They’re easy to clean since the mats are detachable and can be washed by hand or in a commercial-grade dishwasher. These shelving units offer a higher-quality alternative to the MetroMax Q series without going as high in pricing as the MetroMax i series, so they’re generally a good fit for commercial kitchens that need high-quality, long-lasting shelving at a lower price range.

MetroMax 4 shelving key features:

  • Rust- and corrosion-proof (lifetime warranty)
  • Bacteria-, mold-, mildew-, and fungi-resistant
  • Adjusts without tools in one-inch increments
  • Vented open-grid and solid polymer shelf mats detach easily for thorough hand- or machine-washing
  • Extremely durable, all-polymer shelving that withstands chemicals, moisture, and harsh environments
  • Beams and posts made of continuous glass fibers and thermoset resin compounds
  • End beams, adjustable feet, and shelf wedge connectors made of reinforced nylon
  • Available in stationary, mobile, and high-density track options
  • 600-pound capacity per shelf, 2,000 pounds per stationary unit
  • 900- to 1,200-pound capacity per shelf on heavy-duty dunnage shelves
  • 750-pound capacity as a mobile unit (depending on casters used)
  • Can withstand temperatures of -20 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit with intermittent exposure to 212 degrees Fahrenheit (for cleaning)

MetroMax i

MetroMax_iThe most durable of the MetroMax shelving series—MetroMax i—is rust- and corrosion-proof with a lifetime warranty. These shelving units are the easiest to clean with smooth surfaces and removable mats that can be both hand- and machine-washed for convenience and sanitary reasons. These units are the only option that can be wall-mounted and are NSF-approved for use in any environment, including damp or warm rooms that tend to promote bacteria and microbe growth. MetroMax i has the largest weight-bearing capacity, with up to 1,000 pounds per shelf and 2,000 pounds per unit. The rigid, four-sided frame with center trusses, along with optimal wedge and post stability, ensure these are the most durable, and sturdy of the three MetroMax options.

MetroMax i shelving key features:

  • Rust- and corrosion-proof (lifetime warranty)
  • Bacteria-, mold-, mildew-, and fungi-resistant
  • Adjusts without tools in one-inch increments

InterMetro’s Super Erecta shelving is a popular choice among commercial kitchens. Available in either wire- or solid-shelf construction, these shelving units are versatile, adjustable, and interchangeable to suit your storage needs. Like the MetroMax shelving series, the units are snap-in-place assembled and easily rearranged with countless accessories and add-ons, which makes them highly customizable, though not as resistant to rust and corrosion (with exception to the Metroseal 3 epoxy-coated option).
